SPRING FOR THE BOHRA'S

The onset of spring is said to bring a time of utmost prosperity and happiness in the hearts of people. In the islamic calendar the onset of spring is known as the month of ‘Rabi Al Awal’. The literal translation meaning the first month of spring.

Spring means that a season filled with holidays and rest is approaching which means that there is super delicious food being made in the kitchens of people all around the world. I, Abbas Bootwala, one half of the food page junkfood junction, is eager to share with you whatever happens in the bohri kitchen when spring approaches.

The month of rabi al awwal holds a mark of great importance in the hearts of all bohris around the world. It is welcomed by every house making a special sweet dish in their house known as Kalamra. The kalamra is basically a rice and curd sweet dish which makes literally every reader’s mouth water.

You can prepare kalamro by taking cooked rice and mixing them with sweetened yogurt. Then you need to churn the rice for almost an hour, which is the most fun part in preparing as you can sense all of the aromas of the sweet being prepared. The dish is prepared at a warm temperature and on completion u can garnish it with either rose petals, raisins or pomegranate. This dish is prepared many times and even shared around households and loved ones, especially on the 12th day of the month as a mark of happiness to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Mohammed. (S.A.W)

The week of the birth of the prophet (12-16 rabi al awwal) is of real importance in the Dawoodi Bohra household as we celebrate the death anniversary of the 52nd leader of the community. It has been a tradition since the past seven years that every bohri household receives its food from the community kitchen during these days.

In the celebrations of the prophet’s birthday each and every house prepares “Sodhanu”, which is another sweet dish made with rice. It’s cooked rice topped with ghee and sugar. If you are lucky I highly recommend to be a part of bohri feast and be amused with an array of unique flavours and experiences.

So here’s me saying goodbye for now and I hope you would have liked the blog. If you liked it, please share it with your friends, family, etc.

THANK YOU AND STAY SAFE!
